I take a developmental play-based approach to therapy, believing that therapy should provide children with experiences of joy and success. In the process of completing tailored play-based activities at the "just right" challenge level, children also progress up the developmental ladder and develop their sensory, motor, emotional and cognitive skills.
Family involvement in sessions is strongly emphasized and I also facilitate regular family education meetings. This empowers family to be at the centre of the process and helps to transfer therapeutic recommendations into the home environment.
I am especially passionate about working with children with sensory differences; particularly 0-5 year olds.
I graduated from the University of Queensland in 2011 and have since worked as an Occupational Therapist across a variety of fields. I made the change to paediatrics in 2017 and have never looked back. In my spare time I can be found enjoying time at home with my husband and son, or hiking, climbing, biking or canyoning in the beautiful Blue Mountains.
Therapy sessions are provided in an environment rich with opportunities for sensory and movement play (think swings, crash mats, etc!). Within play activities chosen by the child, they are guided towards the “just right challenge” for developing their capacities (sensory, motor, cognitive, emotional). Children experience feelings of joy, connection and success alongside building their skills. This approach fosters an intrinsic sense of self-confidence and motivation as well as progressing up the developmental ladder. Parents and caregivers are also central participants in the play and are guided to tailor their interactions to the child’s individual differences.
In the rock climbing world the phrase “climb on” gives the signal that a climber can begin.
This small phrase conveys a spirit of encouragement, support and belief in the climber’s ability. This is the spirit I channel into my OT service.
Not to mention, there is plenty of climbing related play in sessions - crash mats, soft play pieces, swings - all for a child to “climb on” and explore!
